Maddox Larson is a second-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Philosophy at Northwestern University. He is also pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Cognitive Science through the Cognitive Science Program. In 2025, Maddox earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Creighton University.
Maddox’s research interests are centered in epistemology, especially issues related to epistemic normativity, epistemic agency, and epistemic responsibility. Broadly, he’s interested in how an empirically-supported account of human cognitive processes can improve theorizing about what we can know, how we can know it, and when we can and should hold others accountable for epistemic mistakes. Recently, this has led to interest in motivated reasoning and its normative status.
