Whenever a student serves as a TA for a course, the normal arrangement will be that the faculty member whom the student is assisting will visit the class, discuss the student’s performance, and write a brief evaluation, which will be placed in the student’s file. When appropriate, the student’s class can instead be visited by some other faculty member.
When the student enters the job market, a faculty member will write a letter in which the student’s qualifications as a teacher are described. That letter will draw upon the evaluations that have been placed in the student’s file, and will become part of the dossier that is sent to potential employers.
