Awards for Excellent Undergraduate and Graduate Students
The awards and honors listed below were announced at the dean's convocation, were personally celebrated at this year's senior luncheon. Here's the lineup:
The STEPHEN WHITE prize for the best paper written by a student in their first or second year goes to:
- Anoushka Kapur (1st Year) for their paper "Final: The Evolution of the Normative Conception of Democracy" (instructor Axel Mueller in PHIL 109, 'What Is Democracy?').
The BRENTANO prize for the best paper written by a student in their third or fourth year goes to:
- Carl Morison (4th Year) for their paper "Kant’s Limitation of Metaphysics and its Secure Path of a Science" (instructor Axel Mueller in PHIL 313-1 'Kant's Critique of Pure Reason 1-- The Analytic')
The DAVID HULL PRIZE for the best senior thesis of the academic year goes to
- Olive Liu for their interdisciplinary thesis "Defeating the Dragon: Epistemic Injustice Towards Asian/American Women" (PHIL supervisor Sandy Goldberg, As-Am Studies supervisor: Ji-yeon Yuh)
The HONKOM's recommendation for HONORS WITH DISTINCTION IN PHILOSOPHY, goes out to
- Max Chapin for their excellent work in the honors program, excellent accomplishments as a philosophy major, and their highly accomplished work in the thesis "The Philosophical Therapy of Crime and Punishment" (supervisor Mark Alznauer),
- Nick Corvino for their excellent work in the honors program, excellent accomplishments as a philosophy major , and their highly accomplished philosophical work in the interdisciplinary thesis "Naked Democracy: Getting from Public to Visible Politics" (supervisor Cristina Lafont).
- Justin Jasperse for their excellent work in the honors program, excellent accomplishments as a philosophy major, and their very highly accomplished work in the thesis "Conciliatory Civic Friendship: Public Reasoning as a Dialectical Activity" (supervisor Chad Horne)
- Olive Liu for their excellent work in the honors program, very high accomplishments as a philosophy major, and their very highly accomplished philosophical work in the interdisciplinary thesis "Defeating the Dragon: Epistemic Injustice Towards Asian/American Women" (supervisor Sandy Goldberg & Ji-yeon Yuh [Asian-American Studies])
HONORS IN PHILOSOPHY goes out to
- Julia Leonardis for their excellent work in the honors program, excellent accomplishments as a philosophy major, and their accomplished work in the thesis "Happiness and the Limits of Hedonism" (supervisor Patricia Marechal).
- Ros Valdespino for their excellent work in the honors program, excellent accomplishments as a philosophy major, and their accomplished work in the thesis "Relational Equality and Our Obligations in Healthcare" (supervisor Chad Horne).
- Jacob Wright for their excellent work in the honors program, very good accomplishments as a philosophy major, and their accomplished work in the thesis "An Environmental Reconciliation of the Sublime" (supervisor Rachel Zuckert).
This year's STEPHEN TOULMIN PRIZE honoring superior overall achievement throughout all courses in their UG-career as major and amount of engagement in philosophy-courses (measured by the best GPA in philosophy x credits for a graduating philosophy major) is awarded to
- Justin Jasperse
The Lula A. Peterson-prize for exemplary citizenship for the philosophy major honors students who have gone far beyond the call of duty in their functions and organizing activities to truly create atmospheric and social changes in our department. This year's award is shared by
- Olive Liu for their exemplary, exceptionally effective leadership and continuous energetic engagement as recruiter for WiPhi, leading participant in the Ethics Bowl Team, mediator of cooperations between PHIL UG organizations (WiPhi, NUPS, Ethics Bowl), SAB representative over the past two years during the pandemic, MAP-UG president, and their engagement in recruiting and expanding the reach of PHIL UG organizations.
The Ruth Barcan Marcus Award for tutoring in formal logic goes to
- Maria Galaviz Huerta & Amelia Mylvaganam
As this year's Senior Marshal for the Philosophy department at the Graduation ceremonies we designated (for his continued engagement in the community and innovative and energetic initiatives around the PHIL UG-community)

The departmental Thomas A. McCarthy Award for Excellence in Teaching by a philosophy graduate teaching assistant went to
